There are few city names in Hungary that are as tangible and yet as mysterious as Deer<\/span><\/span>. At first sight, it seems obvious: it must have something to do with the animal. But is it really? And if so, how exactly?<\/p>

There are many theories and stories surrounding the origin of the name Szarvas - together they give the special atmosphere that still surrounds Szarvas today.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A lesser-known theory, but one that is taken seriously by historians, is that \u201eSzarvas\u201d may have originally been a personal name.<\/p>

In the Middle Ages, it was common for a settlement to be named after its founder or its owner. The name \u201eSzarvas\u201d existed as a personal name in the old Hungarian name system, so it is possible that the name of the settlement was associated with a person of this name.<\/p>

Once upon a time (even though I had internet on my phone), lying on the private deck of Palov's Guesthouse, I too had this question. I took out my phone and started digging around. I found the hypotheses described in this article, but I also found another:<\/p>

A Secrets of the deer<\/a> We have already written about the formation of the Dead River, but before humans touched this circular, unbridled, unregulated water, a bird's-eye view of the water showed a picture of \u201ehorns\u201d, horn-like curves. And so this town - where the landscape itself drew the horniest part of the K\u00f6r\u00f6s, Szarvas - became an adjective.<\/p>

We also had a family discussion about this theory, as I still can't find the source where I read it, but I'm sure I didn't dream up this theory (my brain is just not that creative \ud83d\ude42 )<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The most obvious explanation is that the settlement was named after the deer that once lived here in large numbers. The K\u00f6r\u00f6s region used to be a much wilder area of woodland and meadows, providing an ideal habitat for big game.<\/p>

In this interpretation, the origin of the name \u201eDeer\u201d is simple: a place where deer were common. This type of naming is not uncommon in Hungarian settlements.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
